Ruta: Benifallet - Fontcalda

Ruta: Benifallet - Fontcalda

Description

The sanctuary of the Virgin of Fontcalda, located 2 km from Prat de Comte station, is a must-stop whether you come down from Bot or Horta de Sant Joan or head up from Benifallet or Tortosa.

An ideal place that, in addition to offering a well-deserved rest during the route, allows us to visit the sanctuary dedicated to its Virgin, set in a wonderful spot beside the Canaletes River—silent and transparent—flowing gently, enclosed by mountains. Beyond the beautiful area surrounding the sanctuary, we should take a peaceful walk along the stream that descends from Els Ports, with its crystal-clear waters caressing the rock and, over the centuries, carving gorges of whimsical shapes.

If we start from Benifallet station, the route is quite easy, flat, and enchanting. The captivating power of nature increases as we go, until we reach the sanctuary. We recommend setting off in the morning to arrive before midday, rest, and enjoy a relaxed lunch. Those fond of a nap can take advantage of the moment afterward. In the afternoon, stroll along the paths by the Canaletes and fully enjoy the surroundings and their peace… but remember to head back!

The only drawback is a slight slope, almost imperceptible. However, it is rewarded by the beauty of the natural landscape. We will also enjoy the coolness of the tunnels, and soon cross the impressive Riberola bridge, which lets us glide majestically above the Canaletes. We briefly move away from the river when passing the Pinell de Brai station, but we soon meet it again, and it will accompany us all the way to the sanctuary.

The name Fontcalda refers to a hot spring that emerges at the foot of the site, right beside the Canaletes. These are mineral-medicinal waters that flow at around 25°C. They contain chloride and calcium carbonate, magnesium sulfate, and sodium chloride. It is believed they were already used in ancient times for therapeutic purposes.

Going to the Greenway and not visiting Fontcalda is like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower, or going to Barcelona and not strolling along Las Ramblas.

Important: The equipment includes an Orbea bicycle, helmet, light, and a bag with basic repair tools.
