# Caiac + Via Verda

The Miravet–Benifallet canoe route is our crown jewel, the most spectacular kayak route and our clients' favourite! They say it is the most beautiful stretch of the Catalan Ebro. The Ebro, our protagonist, leaves the lands of the Ribera d'Ebre and gently flows into the Baix Ebre to bring it its vital gift.
Here it shows us the Barrufemes gorge, one of its most beautiful faces: with hair of lush vegetation, a nose and ears of ancient rock, and eyes that watch over us. Enclosed between the last foothills of the Cardó mountains and the side spurs of the Cavalls and Pàndols ranges, it forms a setting of unique scenic beauty, together with a great historical and cultural heritage. The route is far from the road, so you are surrounded by nature for almost the entire trip. We will arrive in Benifallet, which offers rich and varied gastronomy, produce from its market gardens, the beautiful Coves Meravelles caves, or walks in the Cardó mountains. Benifallet is said to be the village of the caves, the llaüt (traditional boat), the canoes, the table, the fruit and the little pastry.
The Pas de Barca is a very peaceful spot, with a wonderful panoramic view of the river, the village of Miravet and its castle. Before getting on the water, we give a short theoretical and practical briefing and some tips for the less experienced, and then it's everyone into the river. In this area, with very calm water and no current, the theory is put into practice and the most basic manoeuvres are learned easily and quickly.
Our guides accompany the group and keep an eye on everyone at all times. They also coach you in the correct paddling technique and river navigation, and point out the places of interest along the route, both historical and scenic. During the descent we usually make a stop to rest, stretch our legs, drink, eat, take photos, go for a swim, swap boats, observe wildlife… We also paddle through the middle of some beautiful islands along the way, where you can appreciate even more the beauty and richness of the riverside forest.
If you have experience, it can be done without a guide.
We have single and double kayaks, as well as triple and quad ones (we only recommend these when two adults travel with children in the middle). Please let us know how many and which types of kayak you would like.
 
A 20 km route to the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de la Fontcalda, located 2 km from Prat de Comte station, is a must-stop, whether we come down from Bot or Horta de Sant Joan or go up from Benifallet or Tortosa.
An ideal spot that, besides the well-earned rest from the route, lets us visit the sanctuary dedicated to its Virgin, in a marvellous place beside a silent, transparent Canaletes river that plays and runs gently, enclosed between mountains. As well as the lovely grounds surrounding the sanctuary, we should stroll calmly along the bank of the stream that flows down from Els Ports with its crystal-clear waters, caressing the rock and carving, over the centuries, gorges of capricious shapes.
If we set out from Benifallet station, the route is quite easy, flat and enchanting. The captivating power of nature grows as we go, until we reach the sanctuary. We recommend setting off in the morning, so as to arrive at the sanctuary before midday, rest and have a relaxed lunch. Nap lovers can take advantage afterwards. In the afternoon, wander along the little paths, along the bank of the Canaletes, and make the most of the surroundings and their peace… Hey! But remember to head back.
The only drawback is a slight, almost imperceptible gradient. But we find the comforting reward that nature and the landscape give us. We will really enjoy the coolness of the tunnels, and soon we cross the impetuous Riberola bridge, which lets us fly majestically over the Canaletes. We will move away from the river briefly to pass through El Pinell de Brai station, but we soon find it again and it will accompany us all the way to the sanctuary itself. The name Fontcalda ("hot spring") refers to a hot-water spring that wells up at the foot of the grounds, right beside the Canaletes. They are mineral-medicinal waters that emerge at about 25 ºC. They contain calcium chloride and carbonate, magnesium sulphate and sodium chloride. They are believed to have been used for therapeutic purposes since antiquity.
Coming to the Via Verda (Greenway) and not visiting the Fontcalda is like going to Paris and not visiting the Eiffel Tower, or going to Barcelona and not strolling along Las Ramblas.
*Important: The equipment included is an Orbea bike, helmet, light and a bag with tools for simple repairs.
